How Do I Configure System Information on the S-Series?

Step 1: Overview

The S50 allows you to configure several descriptive system parameters to ease in the administration of internetworking equipment.  The ability to document and identify networking equipment will make it easier for network administrators to manage and maintain their network.  There are two ways that system information can be viewed or used:

  • Via Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) using an SNMP management station.
  • Via the command-line interface on the S50.

The information in this document is based on an S50 running SFTOS Version 2.2.1.

Step 2: Connect a Terminal to the Console Port.

Connect a terminal to the console ports of the switch. For details on how to do this, see How Do I Log In to the Console?

Step 3: Set the Prompt.

Use the hostname command to set the name of the switch.

(Force10)#hostname S50-1

(S50-1)#

Step 4: Set the Remaining System Parameters.

Use the snmp-server command to set the system contact, system location and sysname.    The system location is a text string used to identify the location of the switch. The text string may be up to 31 alpha-numeric characters.

(S50-1)#configure

(S50-1) (Config)#snmp-server ?

community                Configure SNMP community entries.

contact                  Enter a system contact.

enable                   Enable SNMP Traps.

location                 Enter a system location.

sysname                  Enter a system name.

(S50-1) (Config)#snmp-server sysname S50-1

(S50-1) (Config)#snmp-server contact  408-571-3500

(S50-1) (Config)#snmp-server location TAC

Step 5: Verify Your Configuration Changes.

(S50-1) #show sysinfo

System Description............. Force10 S50

System Name.................... S50-1

System Location................ TAC

System Contact..................408-571-3500

System Object ID................force10

Information to Collect if You Open a TAC Case

If you would like assistance from Force10 Networks after following the steps above, please use the Create Service Request form on the iSupport page and include the following information if available:

  • Console captures showing the steps taken
  • Output from the show tech-support command to capture the installed hardware and the SFTOS version
  • Network diagrams or other descriptions of the network design, including VLAN configurations and IP address ranges
